TripAdvisor.com just reported that this little bit of land in San Francisco Bay is the winner of its 2015 Travelers' Choice Awards for Landmarks in the U.S. No longer a penitentiary, it once housed such storied characters as Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, Alvin Karpis and the Birdman of Alcatraz.

In movies, stars Clint Eastwood, Burt Lancaster, Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, Kevin Bacon and others did their time on the Rock. Alcatraz is now a National Park Service facility. For visiting info, go to www.nps.gov/alca
