Some Foreign Airlines Offer Volunteer Stopover Deals


For example, book a flight on Norwegian Air, with the destination of Paris. The schedule includes a stop in Oslo. Normally, you’d stay on the plane for the hour or so it takes other travelers to exit and enter.

However, suppose the airline offered you a free night at an Oslo hotel, dinner and other goodies worth several hundred dollars? That’s the trend these days for some foreign airlines to get you to spend time and money in their home city. Would you, a senior with no particular reason to hurry, add a free day or two to the journey? For senior travelers, it could be to mark 25, 30, 40, 50 or more years of wedded bliss. A journey to a relaxing destination could be just the right way to honor the occasion.

USA Today recently questioned seasoned travelers as to the best places to do an anniversary celebration. Here they are in rank order, with Kauai, Hawaii, topping the list. Following are Sedona AZ; Santorini, Greece; Montreal, Quebec; Amalfi Coast and Venice in Italy; Telluride CO: Paris, France; Charleston SC; and St. Lucia. However, we question why Las Vegas NV didn’t make the USA Today list. Many hip seniors go to Sin City to celebrate anniversaries. For example, where else could could you renew (or enjoy with a new spouse) holy vows at a glitzy wedding chapel on the Las Vegas Strip, with the ceremony conducted by an Elvis impersonator preacher?
