Travel Destinations To Visit Before I Check Out |

Your travel4seniors.com editor has roamed the world, and as with all nonagenarians (90+ years old), I must expect my one-way journey at any time. Some choices for final forays are based on those I’ve experienced through the years.
For example, during World War 2 my Navy travels took me to the Philippines in one of the last campaigns of the war. With an advanced Marine unit, I spent time in Samar, Leyte and the capital city of Manila. A return today could be interesting, including a visit to our old Navy campsite along the city’s Pasig River.
Altho I was a young teenager when WW2 started with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, I’d visit the USS Arizona memorial there near Honolulu. Recalled to active Navy duty in the Korean War, I could also enjoy a stroll around the capital city of Seoul.
And maybe a grand finale would be several nights and days at the Venetian Resort in Las Vegas. It’s where the Sands Hotel stood before being demolished a decade or so ago. A high school classmate was an official of the Sands way back when, and introduced me to some friends. Now I’d like to imagine I’m reliving the hearty times when I wined and dined with the infamous Rat Pack of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr.

Of course, there are haunted old houses, ghostly images, murder locations and other scary places to visit in the scary season. However, if your travels take you to the British capital city at Halloween or any other time, be sure to spend a few horrific hours at the Tower.
It’s the most infamously haunted location in England. Many royals and enemies of royals were imprisoned and died there. The most notable were the two young princes, Edward V and his brother Richard, who were murdered there. On October 25, 1881, a bunch of bad guys fought a gun duel with good guys in the town main street outside a horse stable and yard. The good guys included Sheriff Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday. Killed or jailed were all the bad guys, called the Clanton gang.
In addition to regular gunfight reenactments and other celebrations, there are remainders of the old days, including the O.K. Corral, Boot Hill Cemetery, old saloons and other interesting sites. Amsterdam Still Enjoyable, But Too Many Overactive Tourists |

Your travel4senior editor recently returned from a late summer visit to a favorite city. Beautiful Amsterdam, with its parks, classic buildings, museums, canals and shops is still there. However, senior visitors may too often find the Dutch city plagued by rowdy teens and young adults.
It can be disturbing to walk the streets at night through the noise, trash, human waste and drug parties. Some areas, such as the infamous red light district, attract many celebrating crowds of young people, and should be avoided by seniors who prefer clean sidewalks, peace and quiet.
Fortunately, in late autumn and early winter, the crowds are smaller and more mature, because the younger people are at school and work. If you go, make it from mid-October to early December. Of course, if you enjoy a walk through a winter city landscape, January and February in Amsterdam are nearly empty of tourists, and prices are at their lowest. And your camera will get you great snowy and selfie shots.

Your travel4seniors.com editor's camera captured this recent scene from an apartment balcony just as the autumn day was ending. Coincidentally it was just a few city blocks from the location of the famed 1950 movie. Remember Gloria Swanson loving and finally shooting William Holden at her Sunset Boulevard mansion? And then the famous ending line, “I’m ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille.” When your travels take you to Los Angeles, be sure to enjoy a drive by the mansions on Sunset Boulevard. When the movie was made, the average home price there was $50,000. Now the same properties sell for $10 million and up.
