Just a few blocks away from posh Beverly Hills and glamorous Sunset Strip, your travel4seniors.com editor hikes along Santa Monica Boulevard at 10 am and 2 pm. I see lovely scenery, chauffeured limos, costly condos, upscale stores, fashionable shoppers and familiar celebs. Other daily sights are not quite so pleasant.

The street is also Route 66 that ends at the ocean in the city of Santa Monica. It’s daily haven for the homeless. Sidewalks are resting and toilet places after nights of drink and/or drugs. Some set up temporary cardboard shelters. Others stand at grocery entrances, begging for money and food.

The sidewalks are hazardous to families and elderly travelers. Not only from homeless, but by even more dangerous bikers and scooter riders who illegally race along the walkways. So, if you’re old and tour these city streets, be sure to follow all safety rules. And by the way, did I mention the fresh dog poo and peepee deposited along fragrant West Hollywood sidewalks?

For a great autumn experience, join up in an exploration of an underground cave. Carlsbad Caverns descend to down a quarter of a mile, one of the deepest limestone caves in the U.S. The humorist Will Rogers named it “the Grand Canyon with a roof over it.”

Tours are available for every skill level, from expert spelunker to ranger escorted. Be sure to be at the entrance at sunset with your camera when thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats fly out to seek delicious desert bugs. For more info, go to www.nps.gov/cave

If your travel plans include Myrtle Beach, be careful with your words. Considering all the extremely foul words we endure these days in night clubs, movie houses and on cable TV, this oceanside town law is like a breath of fresh air.

Your travel4seniors.com editor did active Navy duty in two wars and am certainly familiar with curse words, and maybe spouted a few of themlf when people were trying to kill me. Also, I’ve experienced filthy utterances from pioneer cursers including Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Richard Pryer, Sarah Silverman and other stand-up toilet mouths.

So, maybe the Myrtle Beach cursing ban is a step back to more gentle, articulate speech times. Profane language there is a misdemeanor disorderly conduct offense by city ordinance, and offenders face a possible 30 days in the town jail and/or a fine of up to $500.
