Time Travel: Will It Ever Be Possible For Our Bucket List?

USA Today.com recently did a report agreeing with Albert Einstein’s theory that some day people will be able to enjoy new ways to go places.

Of course, there are many questions. For example, if we can go back in time, will we be able to change the past so it will affect the future? Then, if we could travel to the future, would we’d still be alive and at the same age as we are today? Additionally, if we can return to early Vegas visits, could we attend a 1970s live Elvis concert, including dinner and drinks, for $25?

It all led us to ponder what choices we’d make if we were given the opportunity to take a one-time journey into the past or future. Here are some ideas for the ultimate bucket list, and we welcome senior readers to come up with their own:

Visit ancient Athens to discuss philosophy with Socrates...
On the scaffolding with Michelangelo as he paints the ceiling of Rome’s Sistine Chapel...
Sit in with the guys in Philly as they consider Tom Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence...
Go ashore at San Salvador with Chris Columbus and his crew as they discover the New World...
In the audience at Gettysburg when Abe Lincoln gives his short address...
On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial when Martin Luther King gives his memorable speech...
And just one more my wife insists I include: into the future to see the first woman President of the United States sworn in on January 20,  2017!!!

Retirement: Try A Visit, Then Maybe Settle Down PDF Print E-mail

If your retirement will happen in the next couple of years, consider a research vacation to help make up your mind. Many factors need to be processed when choosing a retirement location. First, of course, you must have enough income to be able to afford the community you choose.

If retirement funds are OK, you'll still have to resolve other aspects such as weather, local medical services, availability for family visits, recreation facilities and other important points.

Your travel4seniors.com editor. retired for 26 years, has visited virtually every corner of the world since taking off those workaday chains. With my savvy spouse we investigated all kinds of potential retirement locations. Here are ten possibilities, not necessarily in our opinionated order:

1. California: Real estate prices are insanely over-inflated, but you can hope it will be affordable when you consider a specific area. Lifestyle is great in San Diego, Los Angeles and other Southern California areas. San Francisco and Northern California offer sophistication and culture, but even higher real estate inflation.

Santa Monica CA: Two Major US Highways End Here PDF Print E-mail

Are you old enough to remember singer Bobby Troup’s song, “Route 66”, introduced 70 years ago in 1946? You can still get your kicks on that popular highway, but the lyrics are not quite correct. They say, “Well, it winds from Chicago to L.A.”

Actually, it does wind more than 2,400 miles from Chicago to L.A.. But it doesn’t end there. Route 66 continues another 15.7 miles to the Pacific Ocean beach at Santa Monica, California.

Another cross-country highway, Route I-10, takes a more southern route, and goes the 2,400 miles from Jacksonville, Florida, to Santa Monica.

Ease Flight Delay Blues By Planning For Them PDF Print E-mail

Hopefully, Hurricane Matthew may be just an unpleasant memory. For seniors with flight plans, it's just another example of if something can go wrong with your schedule, it will.

Murphy’s Law was never more in effect than it is in today’s air travel. Anticipate and prepare for delays, because even the usual on-time and smooth flights can involve some schedule worries.

San Francisco CA: Restaurants With Best Views PDF Print E-mail

Guest Senior Writer LLJ, Chicago IL:
I recently gazed at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge from high up in two of the city’s loftiest restaurants. They’re the Top of the Mark at the Mark Hopkins Hotel and the Crown Room at the Fairmont Hotel.

The famed rooms are on the penthouse floors of vintage hotels at the crest of the city’s high point, Nob Hill. During World War II and the Korean War, members of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps traditionally spent their last nights ashore in San Francisco at one of those restaurants before sailing to Pacific Ocean battles.

Travel Trauma: What If Your Credit Card Is Stolen PDF Print E-mail

Of course, prevention of ID theft is a priority to wandering seniors. Before you leave home, study updated security info from your credit card company. While traveling, keep it and all other ID in a secure pocket of your purse or wallet, preferably one with a zipper or velcro tape.

When away from home and you have any fears that your credit card number or other ID may be stolen, pay in cash. This applies in city cabs, retail stores, sidewalk cafes, restaurants and other busy retail situations.
