Google/AARP Map Tool Benefits Senior Drivers


If your spring and summer plans include long road trips, Google Maps and AARP have put their tech tetes together to help make your journeys more economical and enjoyable.

According to USA Today, they’ve eliminated the need for lugging along with you stacks of road maps, info books, discount brochures and other bothersome paperwork. With the new Google/AARP map tool, every bit of thousands of items about travel info is available immediately with just a click on your iPhone or similar electronic device.

You’re now able to plan ahead for the most favorable routes, rest stops, restaurants, shopping, hotels and thousands of other bits of useful travel information. Even better, it allows you to check prices, take advantage of discounts and maintain a sensible budget throughout your road trips.

If your autumn travel schedules include visits to some South of the Border cities, consider the growing gang violence in certain areas. According to the Los Angeles Times and other news sources, the US government warns that the traditional senior tropical destination of Cancun is dangerous for visitors.

The city is on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, with tropical coastal beaches and lush hotels welcoming visitors. However, the growing drug gang violence in the area should be a warning to seniors who vacation there.

HMS Victory, Portsmouth UK: Commanded by the legendary Admiral Horatio Nelson, the HMS Victory was his flagship during the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar. Restored and still manned by a Royal Navy crew, she's berthed at the Portsmouth Naval Base on England's South Coast.

There are year-round programs aboard HMS Victory, allowing visitors to experience how British sailors lived and fought more than 200 years ago. With a tour group, I saw crew living quarters, armaments, the cabin where Admiral Nelson died and many other areas of the ship.

That could mean traveling from NYC to Los Angeles in less than 90 minutes. And if they’ll be able to run across water, NYC to London in the same quick time. Of course, it’s all still in the spec stage for such trackless super trains in the far future.

However, UK’s The Sun reports that engineers at the China Aerospace Science and Tech Corp claim they’ve already started on the plans. Of course, none of the tech beancounters have come up with a simple way to eliminate the two-hour drive through heavy city traffic to get to the train station, followed by another hour of checking in and pre-boarding security body cavity searches.
