Washington DC: New Smithsonian Museum Adjunct Debuts

President Obama officially opened the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the nation’s capital. Attending the ceremonies were members of America’s oldest African American church, First Baptist of Williamsburg VA.

A highlight of the event was the ringing of the 150-year-old church Freedom Bell. The congregation was established in 1776, the year the American Revolution began. Many of the first members were slaves and freed-slaves. In the pre-Civil War days, church services were held secretly in nearby Virginia farm fields and forests. Washington DC: Watergate Deuxiéme Partie PDF Print E-mail

If your travels take you to the Nation’s Capital this political election season, you may want to consider staying in an infamous location. The scandal of snooping at the hotel sent Richard Nixon packing 40 years ago. Now, after being shamefully shuttered for nearly a decade, the Watergate has reopened.

The hotel is extensively updated and boasts a five-star rating and many new luxury features. Conveniently located at Virginia and New Hampshire NW, it’s in the busy Foggy Bottom neighborhood. Nearby is the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, George Washington University and the National Mall.

Rates, including taxes and other add-ons, start at about $300 a night. When you check in, the desk clerk may not appreciate it if you do the V gesture and shout, “I am not a crook!” For more info, go to www.the watergatehotel.com

Single Senior Plea: Share A Cruise With Me, Anyone? PDF Print E-mail

Q: I’m a single guy, age 57, but look, act and feel much younger. I’m considering a two-week river cruise from Sweden through Scandinavia and Russia. It would cost about 40% less if I cruised with another person. I’d like to find a lady companion to share the expenses and cabin.

I’ve seen cruise sharing ads on websites, but it seems all the women are in their 60s and older. That’s OK, but not for me. I’d prefer one who’s at least 10 years younger than I am. What do you suggest? WRMcC, Evanston IL

Sr Travel Tips: Pack Absolute Minimum Or Less PDF Print E-mail

Guest Senior Editor MPL, Milwaukee WI: I traveled frequently on business for 40 years, and since retirement my spouse and I still wander at least once a month. After making all the possible over-packing mistakes, we have some very simple rules:

Unless you're sailing on a super-formal cruise or will attend a function at the White House or Buckingham Palace, take only basic, comfy clothing. Many airlines charge for all check-in bags, $25 or more each. They pile on more fees for those weighing more than max allowed.
