Philadelphia: Are you my mummy?

We don’t know if the exhibit will feature wrap music, but Mummies of the World are now on display at Philly’s Franklin Institute.

Maybe more appropriate for Halloween, the 45 ghoulish figures range from a child who died in ancient Peru six thousand years ago to a wealthy German alcoholic who is still perfectly pickled after nearly 400 years.

For those interested in such creepy statistics, exhibit explainations for how the bodies were preserved include natural conditions, as well as early skills at embalming. Included are demonstrations of state-of-the-art digital research and scanning methods of detecting mummy ages and causes of death.

Since people like to travel with their pets, some of the mummies are accompanied by preserved dogs, cats and monkeys. For more information about the exhibit and the Franklin Institute, go to www.fi.edu

The airline now hopes to make passenger boarding easier and quicker, especially for seniors and families with kids. For about 45 minutes before all passengers get on the outgoing flight, Delta employees will take carry-on bags aboard and place them in the overhead bins.

According to Delta, the free service will speed up the entire loading process, as well as make it less stressful for those passengers who need the most help.

Airborne Etiquette: Don’t Drive Other Passengers Nuts PDF Print E-mail

Air travel etiquette starts before boarding flights. Simple courtesy rules apply while waiting in the airport. An annoying offender is the obnoxious character sitting next to you yakking at full voice on the smartphone just two inches away from your ear.

Every senior traveler needs a handy smartphone to keep up with the latest. However, for the sake of everyone around you in the waiting area, when using your phone, go find a quiet corner. Then yell, squawk and scream as loud as you want.

Senior Destination: Spain's Beautiful, Bountiful Barcelona PDF Print E-mail

Guest Editor PJW, Frankfort KY: We endured an exhausting several plane-change, red-eye flight to Barcelona, and arrived at our hotel at about 3 pm. Then we fell right to sleep. We woke up hungry at midnight, and wondered if we could find any all-night cafe within walking distance.

Just one block from the hotel, we were amazed by bright lights, crowds of strolling people, and every restaurant open and busy. We were informed that the city wakes up after its afternoon siesta and comes to life through the wee hours. That was our first impression of Barcelona: lively both day and night.

Swinging London: Holy Hendrix! A Half-Century Ago! PDF Print E-mail

The usually staid British capital city is remembering pop musical icons from 1966 with the 50th anniversary of Swinging London. The Beatles had already conquered America two years earlier, and others were achieving similar world popularity.

Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, Pete Townsend, Tom Jones, The Dave Clark Five, The Who, Freddie and the Dreamers, and Herman’s Hermits were rocking on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

Of course, this is also the year all of Great Britain is celebrating the 90th birthday Queen Elizabeth II. If you’ll be in town for the royal festivities, reserve a day to relive some of the rock’n’roll memories and locales of 1960s Swinging London. Check with local tour companies about schedules.

Street Vendor Food ABC: Always Be Cautious! PDF Print E-mail

Friends just returned from their annual Baja cruise with an all-too-familiar story. While wandering in an oceanside tourist town, they ate some delicious native food from a street cart. After returning to the ship, they spent the rest of the cruise taking urgent turns in their stateroom toilet.

Of course, even with the old stories about the Tijuana trots, not all street food throughout the world will make you sick. Also, we’re aware that cart people work hard to earn modest livings from tourist sales, and we often patronize them.

However, especially if you have a sensitive stomach, we suggest you limit purchases in an unfamiliar city. Commercially packaged food and bottled water and other safe products are your best options.

In your travels, if you want to eat while wandering or sitting in a park, find a nearby clean retail store or take-out café. Buy your food there, and chances of having bad results are greatly diminished.
